Page breaks

If a template contains conditional text that shows or hides depending on the taxpayer's situation, it is not easy to predict where a page break will appear. However, there are a few ways you can improve the location of page breaks so that they do not break apart critical information.

Open the Paragraph properties

There is no way to insert or remove a page break from a letter in the Template Editor. However are two Paragraph properties that can help you adjust where automatic page breaks appear.

You can turn these options on to force the behaviour, or you may find some of our built-in templates already have them enabled, so disabling the option could be what is needed to achieve your desired result.

To open Paragraph properties:

  1. Click in the paragraph, or select the entire paragraph you want to adjust.
  2. Right-click and select Paragraph.
  3. Or, click the Paragraph properties button in the menu.

Page break before

If you want a section of your letter to always begin on a new page, use the Page break before option. 

We applied this property to some headings on the built-in PreSeason and Homework templates so that the worksheets that start on separate pages.

  1. Right click anywhere in the paragraph that you always want to start on a new page.
  2. Select Paragraph.
  3. In the dialog box that opens, click on the Line And Page Breaks tab.
  4. Check Page break before to force a page break before the selected paragraph.
  5. Click OK to apply the changes.
  6. Save the template.

Keep lines together

If you want to make sure a paragraph does not break across pages, use the Keep lines together option. This works for only a single paragraph, not to keep two paragraphs together. 

To get Keep Lines Together to work and make it look like multiple paragraphs, press Shift + Enter to go to a new line break (creating a <br/> tag in HTML) while still keeping it within the same paragraph. Pressing Enter creates a new paragraph for which the setting will not work.

  1. Click in the paragraph you want to keep together.
  2. Right-click and choose Paragraph.
  3. In the dialog box that opens, click on the Line And Page Breaks tab
  4. Check Keep lines together to make the lines stay together across pages.
  5. Click OK to apply the changes.
  6. Save the template.
