New file options for where to send the T1 Notice of Assessment

The New File options in TaxCycle T1 include default settings for who receives the client's Notice of Assessment and refund.

If you choose a default, TaxCycle assigns your default to the related field on the Info worksheet when you carry forward a file or start a blank tax return.

Where to set the New File options

  1. Go to the File menu, then click on Options.
  2. On the left-hand side of the Options dialog box, scroll to the section for T1 options.
  3. Under this section, click on New File to set the option for all years, or expand New File and click on a year to set the option for a particular year.
  4. On the right-hand side, scroll down until you see Notice of Assessment Contact Method / Refund to preparer mailing address/business address.

Result of each setting

Here's the result of each setting when applied to the Info worksheet:

My file is already created, what's the point of changing this option now?

If you have already carried forward your files to 2014, you can still change the default New File options.

In any files you have already created, TaxCycle will display a review message, like the one below, letting you know when the choice in the field on the Info worksheet does not match the default you have set in options. Click the blue link in the message to quickly update the client file.

And, TaxCycle will automatically carry forward your choice to the next tax season, so if you set the option up for 2014, you'll have it ready for the 2015 season.

While you're at it, why not take the time to review the other T1 New File options to make sure you have them set the way you like them?

Take care when you EFILE 2012 and 2013 returns

For anything but the current filing tax year, the CRA does not allow you to designate the preparer to receive the client's Notice of Assessment or refund.

So, if you EFILE a 2012 or 2013 return, selecting anything other than Neither (the prior year equivalent of None. Send only to client) will result in the following EFILE error:

88 The alternate address option cannot be used on a prior year return, or on a discounted, pre-bankrupt, or a Section 70(1) return for a deceased taxpayer.

In this case, return to the Info worksheet and change the selection for the Notice of Assessment to Neither and try transmitting again.
