TaxCycle version 6.0.31153.0—Paper filing certification of T1 and TP1 returns, improved donations, workflow customization, database changes

This TaxCycle release provides certification for paper filing of T1 and TP1 returns. It also includes new options to allow you to customize workflow for your practice and T2 forms and calculations to address recent customer requests. You must re-index the Client Manager after installing this release.

This release is available as an automatic update. It is also available as a full download from our website and a free trial

Who should install this release?

  • This release contains the latest changes for filing T1 and TP1 tax returns. Anyone wishing to paper-file T1 or TP1 returns should update to this release.

Client Manager re-index required

Due to internal system changes, TaxCycle installs a blank Client Manager database with this release. It must be re-indexed before you can run a search.

  • If you install this update at the end of the day, the Client Manager will re-index automatically overnight. TaxCycle does not need to be running as the Client Manager service runs in the background even when TaxCycle is closed. This re-index is part of what it does every night (so the computer must be powered on).
  • If you don't want to wait, you can manually re-index the database. For instructions on how to do this, read the "Indexing and re-indexing" section in the Index and monitored folders help topic.

The CRA will open this service on Monday, February 20th. We will begin development of this shortly and it will be included in a future release.

Internal system changes: Client Manager re-index required

This release also includes the following system changes to TaxCycle. These are necessary to support new changes coming this season:

  • Modifications to the database tables of the Client Manager. TaxCycle installs a blank Client Manager database with this release. It must be re-indexed before you can run a search:
    • If you install this update at the end of the day, the Client Manager will re-index automatically overnight. TaxCycle does not need to be running as the Client Manager service runs in the background even when TaxCycle is closed. This re-index is part of what it does every night (so the computer must be powered on).
    • If you don't want to wait, you can manually re-index the database. For instructions on how to do this, read the "Indexing and re-indexing" section in the Index and monitored folders help topic.
  • Improvements to the feedback service that transmits fatal errors back to our development team.
  • A change to the way the license activation communicates with our servers.

Donations and TPDonations worksheets

This release includes a rework of the Donations and TPDonations worksheets in TaxCycle T1/TP1. The redesign improves data entry, the flow of the information between the federal and the provincial forms, and carry forward of amounts by specific donation type (especially important for the Québec TP1 returns).

New type column in the data entry table

The Type column in the data entry table of donations allows you to specify the type of donation. By default, every new row in the table uses 1. Registered charity. Otherwise, you can select from the following list:

  1. Registered charity
  2. Government body (Canada, a province, a municipality, etc.)
  3. Registered Canadian amateur athletic association
  4. Registered foreign charitable organization per 149.1(26)
  5. Food from an Ontario farmer to a food bank
  6. Food from a BC farmer to a food bank
  7. Food from a Nova Scotia farmer to a food bank
  8. Food from a Québec farmer to a food bank
  9. Registered Canadian low-cost housing corporations for the aged
  10. Registered universities outside Canada that are prescribed
  11. United Nations or its agencies
  12. US charity, claim limited by US income

The addition of this column also eliminated the need for additional lines on the worksheet to address other donations types.

Also note that the column to designate a donation as a US donation has been removed and replaced by item 12. US charity, claim limited by US income in the Type list.

On the Québec worksheet, TPdonations, there is an additional column for the Québec donation type (this list is different from the federal). This further specifies the type of donations made for Québec tax purposes as Québec Schedule V (TPV) calls for allocating those different types of donations to specific lines on the TPV.

If you've already started entering donations in a 2016 return...

If you have already begun preparing donations for a 2016 return before this update, TaxCycle will convert those to the applicable donation type in the new tables. For example, any US donations will have 12. US charity, claim limited by US income selected in the Type column after this release.

Set the type of donations

New donations by type of donee table

New tables lower down on the Donations and TPdonations worksheets will help you allocate donations carried forward from the prior year to the correct type. You will only need to allocate types this year, as next year's carry forward will retain the type from the column in the data entry table. For 2016 only:

  1. TaxCycle will enter the total donations carried forward from 2015 to 2016 into the first row of the table.
  2. On the rows below that table, enter the amount that applies to each donation type. As you do this, the amount in the first row will be reduced to balance the total carry forward amount.

New/updated forms in TaxCycle T2

  • New S13WS to calculate lines 126 and 414 on Schedule 1.
  • Part 5 added to the S17 for calculating the maximum cumulative reserve for line 600.
  • On the S427(BC), S383(MB), S322(PE) and S411(SK), the line for Amount D from Schedule 17, Credit Union Deductions no longer incorrectly calculates as zero.
  • In Part 1 of the T1044WS, the Previous fiscal year's total assets are calculated when you check the box at the top of the worksheet to complete the T1044 from GIFI.

  • A new section was added to the AT1Exempt form to address tax exempt corporations that do not file AT1 returns. This check box is completed based on the answer selected in the field on the Info worksheet indicating the Type of tax-exempt corporation under section 149. When this box is set to Yes, the AT1 is exempt from filing.

Workflow customization

As a result of a discussion on our online community, you can now choose which workflow items to include in the Save As dialog box and on the Info page under the File menu. You can also change the order of workflow items. This change applies to each module separately and can be set for each year as well. The changes are stored in the Options Profile so you can easily share them with your office.

To show or hide items:

  1. From the Start screen, click Options in the blue bar on the left side. If you have a file open, go to the File menu, then click Options
  2. On the left side of the Options dialog box, expand T1/TP1 (or another module) and expand Workflow, then click on a year.
  3. On the right side, clear a check box to exclude an item from the workflow.
  4. Drag and drop any item to a new place in the list.
  5. Click OK or Apply to save your changes.
  6. Open a TaxCycle file, then go to the File menu and click on Info to see your changes.
  7. If you wish to restore the default settings, go back to Options and click the Restore Defaults link.

Lock file and Unlock file in the Protect menuData locking enhancements

This release makes it possible to save the transmission (EFILE) results to a data locked return without unlocking it. This means that those clients who mark a return complete and have the automatic data locking turned on can now batch transmit and see those results in the return afterwords. This rework includes the following enhancements:

  1. Under the Protect menu, new buttons to manually lock and unlock the data in a file.
  2. TaxCycle writes the signing date of the return back to the Info worksheet when you EFILE. This continues to be the case for unlocked returns. If you EFILE a locked return, however, the signing date on the Info worksheet will remain unchanged and only the signing date on the T183 will be updated.
  3. You can no longer add review marks or sign off review messages when a file is locked. You can also no longer add a new memo or a new tape. For the moment, can still make changes to an existing memo or tape.  (This is something we prefer to change off-season as it is a higher-risk change.)

Carry forward changes

  • T2—Fixed a few lines that were not properly carrying forward from the ProFile® T2 5-year summary.
  • T1—Fixed an issue we had with Taxprep® T1 AgriStability forms and the 5-year summary. An exception was thrown in the background when trying to carry forward the legal land description. Any data after that field did not carry forward. We also added more amounts that were not carrying forward to the AgriStability 5-year summary.

TaxCycle Forms module updates

This release updates the T2058 Election on Disposition of Property by a Partnership to a Taxable Canadian Corporation to the 2016 version.

New documentation topics

The following topics have been added/updated since the last release:

Customer requests

  • T1—The date on the 2015 PostSeason template has been changed to show the current (today's) date. It was previously using the signing date as it appeared on the Info worksheet.
  • T2—The above list of T2 changes are due to customer requests.
  • The above workflow customizations were as a result of customer feedback on the online community.
