The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) announced in March that, starting July 15, 2025, the Authorize a Representative (AuthRep) service for EFILE software will no longer be available for individuals. You will need to use Represent a Client to obtain access to an individual’s CRA account.
This change will not impact authorization requests for business clients (AuthRepBus).
For the full CRA announcement, see the EFILE news and program update from March 6, 2025.
The CRA has enhanced the Alternative process for individuals Authorization Request service in Represent a Client by removing the five-day processing time.
To gain instant access to an individual’s account using the Alternative process for individuals, you must:
To use the Authorization Request service in Represent a Client, the person submitting the authorization request must be the same person seeking to be authorized or a person already associated to a GroupID or a business number (BN) registered in Represent a Client. Authorizations cannot be submitted on behalf of other representatives; however, administrators of GroupIDs or BNs registered in Represent a Client can still manage authorization requests for a group, office or organization.
Starting July 15, 2025, attempting to transmit the AuthRep request will result in the following message from the CRA:
"T864
We cannot proceed with this request. The Authorize a Representative service in EFILE software is no longer available for clients that are individuals. As a result, you will need to use Represent a Client to obtain access. For more information, refer to the message dated March 6, 2025, posted on the EFILE news and program updates page."
All existing authorizations will remain on file with the CRA. You only need to request a new authorization if the old authorization has expired. Any new authorization requests should be submitted through the Represent a Client service.
You will still be able to use Auto-fill My Return. However, you must first complete the access step in Represent a Client.
