Link DoxCycle and TaxCycle files

Updated: 2018-01-26

DoxCycle and TaxCycle files must be linked in order to:

  • Open a DoxCycle file from TaxCycle
  • Open a TaxCycle file from DoxCycle
  • Jump between the source slip and the related data entry form in TaxCycle (and vice-versa)
  • Post extracted values from DoxCycle to TaxCycle
  • Print the tax return back into a DoxCycle PDF

If you use Carry forward and link, or create a DoxCycle file from a TaxCycle return, this is done automatically.  If you created a standalone DoxCycle file, you can link the TaxCycle file after as well.

You can link DoxCycle PDF files with TaxCycle T1, T2, T3, T4/T4A and T5 files.

Link a tax file from DoxCycle

  1. Open or create a DoxCycle PDF. It must contain at least one taxpayer, but can contain the whole family as well.
  2. Click on the TaxLink menu and select the taxpayer name to link a taxpayer to the file.

  3. If the return is not already open in TaxCycle, browse for an open the return.
  4. DoxCycle shows a list of taxpayers in the DoxCycle file and matches them to those in the TaxCycle file. Review and adjust those matches. It is okay to leave some blank if you intend to create different TaxCycle files for some family members, or if you have a separate DoxCycle file for some family members.
  5. Leave the box checked to Automatically update the selected TaxCycle file(s) with the relevant linking information. This will adjust the link settings saved in the TaxCycle file.
  6. Click OK.

Add a spouse or dependant to an existing DoxCycle file

Link to an existing DoxCycle fileDepending on how you first created the DoxCycle file, it may occur that you have linked DoxCycle and TaxCycle files for one taxpayer (such as the principal taxpayer), but then still wish to link in other taxpayer(s) (such as a spouse or dependant) to the same DoxCycle file.

  1. Open a coupled or family TaxCycle tax return.
  2. Go to the return for the taxpayer you wish to link to the family's DoxCycle file.
  3. Click the TaxLink button, then select Link to connect to the existing DoxCycle PDF (that is already linked to the other family member).
  4. This will open the DoxCycle PDF (if it isn't already open) and add the link to it and the TaxCycle file.
  5. Save both the DoxCycle file and the TaxCycle file to retain the link. (You can turn on an option to save both files if you save one. See Save folder and file options in DoxCycle help topic.)

Linking one TaxCycle file to multiple DoxCycle files

Both TaxCycle and DoxCycle files can contain a principal taxpayer, one spouse/partner and any number of dependants.

You have the option to create one DoxCycle file for all family members. Or, you can create separate DoxCycle files for each taxpayer if you want to. For example, for adult children who are in university, so they can have a copy of just their tax return and source documents.

Keeping the tax returns together in a TaxCycle file allows you to take advantage of TaxCycle's family returns calculations, but keeping a separate DoxCycle file for the dependant allows you to provide an archive PDF for just that dependant.
