Template Overrides

A template override lets you make one-time changes to a template’s output for a single client. For example, adding extra text to a specific client’s letter.

Enable Template Overrides

1. From the Start screen, click Options in the blue bar on the left side. If you have a file open, go to the File menu, then click Options.
2. On the left, expand Return Preparation and click Edit.
3. On the right side, scroll down to the section called Templates.
4. To enable template overrides, select one or both of the following options:
   • Allow template overrides on right-click.
   • Allow template overrides by typing.
5. To disable template overrides completely, clear both boxes.

Right-click to Override a Template

1. Right-click on the letter in the return and select Override template.
   
2. A warning dialog box will appear, reminding you that the data flow will be interrupted. You can choose to display this message only once or each time you override a template. (Change this selection later from the Dialog page under Return Preparation options.)
3. Click the Override Template button to confirm you wish to proceed with an override.
   
4. Make your changes to the letter.
5. A red message appears to warn you that the letter will no longer update based on data changes in the tax return.
   

Type to Override a Template

1. Start typing in the letter in the return to activate an override.
2. A red message appears to warn you that the letter will no longer update based on data changes in the tax return.
   

Remove a Template Override

To remove all template overrides, choose between the following options:

1. Right-click and select Remove overrides.
2. Click the Remove overrides button in the red message.
