Automatic updates

Both TaxCycle and DoxCycle stay up-to-date automatically:

  1. The program checks for updates each time you open it. This is done in the background, so it won't interrupt your work. (Don't worry, if you're not connected to the Internet at the time, it will wait until you are.)
  2. If the program finds an update, it downloads it automatically.
  3. When the download finishes, a message on the start screen will tell you the update is ready to install. If you have a return open, this appears in the status bar—the blue or green bar at the bottom of the window.
  4. Click on the message to install the update right away. Or, wait until you close the program. TaxCycle will ask you whether you want to install the update. This usually only takes a few minutes, but you always have the option to wait and install it later.
  5. If you choose to install the update later, the message will still be there the next time you open the program.

Manually checking for updates

  1. If you have a file open and you want to manually check for updates, click the message in the status bar (in the blue or green bar at the bottom of the window when you have a return open) or the green icon on the start screen next to the Support heading.
  2. If there is no update available, a message appears at the bottom of the program window (in the blue or green bar) to tell you the program is up-to-date:

Planning Client Manager updates

We recommend updating the Client Manager server first.

The Client Manager server opens, reads and indexes your files as you work on them throughout the tax season. Because the server doesn’t update files, there is no harm in having a newer version of TaxCycle on the server than on each of your workstations.

If the server version falls behind, it may not be able to open, read and index files as they change (occasionally we need to update the file version when new features are added). To avoid this, plan to update your server computer first.

Automatic update options

  1. To open Options from the Start screen, click Options on the left side. If you have a file open, go to the File menu, then click Options.
  2. On the left side of the dialog box, click Auto-update.
  3. On the right side of the dialog box, check the box to disable or enable auto-updates (enabled by default).
  4. Below, control the update frequency. Select Rush to check for updates every time the program starts (default).
  5. Choose Rush, plus optional auto-update to receive both the Rush updates and any optional updates we release. Optional updates often occur during later in April with new, non-mandatory features. This allows interested TaxCycle users to try the new features during busy tax season, if they wish. Release notes will clarify if this setting is required to receive the auto-update.
  6. If you wish to be more conservative in the timing of updates, choose Moderate. This will try to time the updates with the hours that TaxCycle technical support is available to answer your questions. It also waits a few days after the release before making the udpate available to you. 
  7. Select Custom to serve the automatic updates up from a location on your network or from a folder on the web. This allows you to control when the updates are made available to your organization. Download the auto-update files and put them in the folder, then specify the path here. Learn more on the page where you download the auto-update files
  8. Click Apply or OK to save your changes.
