    2. Carry forward creates a new file from the prior year, inserting the carry forward amounts.
    3. Open browses your computer to open an existing file.
    4. New creates a blank return.
    5. Carry forward and Plan creates a planning return from the prior year, copying all data into the current year.

Tax year end date not supported

If you enter year start and end dates in a T2 and the year end falls after the CRA certification period, you will see a message on the on the Tax year end date field on the Info worksheet:

A similar message will appear if you try to create a new file and enter the dates on the Start screen:

These messages appear when the corporate year falls outside of the dates for which TaxCycle T2 is certified to file returns with the CRA (and other provincial government authorities).

It is most common to see these messages when there is a gap between the certification period and an updated version of TaxCycle T2 software. If you see these message, you can continue creating the return and entering data. TaxCycle will use pro-forma calculations and rates.

It does not generally mean your license has expired. During your license period, you get free updates to TaxCycle T2. This includes updates that extend the T2 certification. You can check to see when your license expires by going to the File menu and then clicking on Help. The date appears in the list of installed products.

Usually, the certification is extended twice a year, around the October/November, and again in the May/June time frame.  Keep an eye out for a TaxCycle T2 software update that extends the certification and be sure to install it when it comes out. Then, you'll have the latest forms and calculations and you can file the return.

Finding prior years

Some tax modules go back several years (T1 goes back to 2012). By default, the start screen only shows the current year and two prior years. You can change this. On a large screen, you can show all modules. On a small screen, you can hide what you don't need.

  1. When you first open TaxCycle, it shows two prior years next to the current year. (You can change this number in Options.) Click the right arrow to scroll to prior years.
  2. Click on the left arrow to scroll back.
  3. scroll-left-start-screen636483637017865619

  4. Click on more years... to expand the list to show all years.
  5. Click on show less to go back to the default number of prior years.
  6. If you make the window narrow enough and you show all years, the Recent list for the module also disappears. Widen the window to show it again.

Start screen options

TaxCycle has a few options so you can configure the Start screen to your liking. For example, you can choose to hide modules for which you don't have a license, or adjust the number of prior-year module columns that show by default (you may want to always see all of them if you work on a big screen.)

  1. Go to the File menu, then click on Options.
  2. In the Options dialog box, click Start Screen on the left.
  3. Make your changes to configure the Start screen as you like it.
  4. Click OK or Apply to save the options.
